Windows XP is an operating system produced by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It was the successor to both Windows 2000 for professional users and Windows Me for home users. It was released to manufacturing on August 24, 2001, and broadly released for retail sale on October 25, 2001.
Windows Vista is an operating system that was produced by Microsoft and is a version of the Windows NT family of operating systems for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, tablet PCs and media center PCs.
While the architecture of Vista is a little better, Vista adds a lot of overhead to support quite a bit of new and sometimes questionable functionality.
Vista is a lot more complex than Windows XP. It's probably more secure, but it still needs a raft of third-party security software and hardware.
